Sow the seeds of love this February with an Organic Centre Course

Have you promised yourself to get growing in 2019? The Organic Centre in Rossinver is helping you learn to love your garden, or rekindle that long lost relationship with it once more.  In operation since 1995, the Leitrim based charity provides an array of courses in growing and sustainable living. They are asking people to sow the seeds of love with one of their up and coming courses as an ideal present this Valentines.

There are many courses to choose from. First off, the centre’s very own Ingrid Foley can help new gardeners find their green fingers. “Starting a garden from Scratch” is a one-day course taking place Sunday Feb 17th. It’s the ultimate start off course to your first gardening year. Participants can learn how to select and assess your site, test your soil, make compost and build fertility. Ingrid will also show you how to make lazy beds, plan a rotation, select favorite tools and you will come away with your first garden plan. The day will combine some indoor along with practical outdoor sessions.

Tom O Brien who learnt from the masters teaches the old craft of basket weaving on his two-day course Sat 16th and Sunday 17th February.  You will even make your own basket to bring home.

Saturday, February 23rd sees Ingrid Foley once more facilitating those who wish to grow using a polytunnel, in her Growing in Polytunnels course. A polytunnel is seen as a wonderful addition to any garden providing early season produce like early potatoes and spring onions. You can learn how to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and basil followed by over wintering crops to harvest produce all year round. A tour of the centre’s many tunnels will include advice also on how to erect a tunnel.

Learn how to propagate your own fruit trees and greatly reduce the costs of creating your own orchard with Phil Wheal in his Grafting Workshop on Sunday 24th of February. Phil will give his hands on experience on techniques of grafting and budding apple, pear, plum and cherry trees. Participants will take their own grafted trees home.

Plan a Years Harvest-Start Now:  Sunday Feb 24th, If you want to harvest vegetables all year round you need a specific sow/plant/harvest/store plan. This is exactly what Ingrid will teach you. You will learn what space and other facilities you need including a polytunnel, and the best of all take home a monthly growing guide. This course is not for total beginners.

And Finally, Want to plan and start a food garden? Klaus Laitenberger has all the practical tips in the Complete Organic Vegetable Course for Beginners on Mon 25th and Tuesday 26th February.
