“The countdown to the Fleadh Cheoil in Sligo has begun,” is the message from Bartley Gavin, Chairperson of the Fleadh Cheoil 2015 ahead of the launch of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Sligo.
The launch of the Fleadh will be performed by Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring TD, at the Sligo Park Hotel at 7:30pm on Friday June 5th.
Also among the invited guests will be Senator Labhrás O Murchú, Ard Stiúrthóir of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Councillor Joe Queenan, Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Michael Brennan, Chair of the Connacht Council of Comhaltas, Bartley Gavin, Chair of Fleadh Cheoil 2015, members of the Fleadh Executive Committee, Fleadh volunteers, sponsors, supporters, and many more.
“Last year we extended a great Sligo welcome to thousands of visitors to our county” said Mr. Gavin. This year, we aim not only to achieve this again, but to exceed the visitor numbers and experience and to build a bigger and better Fleadh than ever.”
The evening will begin with music in the foyer of the hotel, and the launch itself will take place in a conference room adjoining the main reception. Afterwards, musicians and other members of the public are invited to take part in various music sessions throughout the hotel.
Ahead of the launch of the Fleadh Cheoil, Labhrás O Murchú, Ard Stiúrthóir of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann said that he is looking forward to another exciting week of music in August. “Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is one of Ireland’s greatest cultural attractions, and year after year grows in numbers and in terms of profile internationally. Last year, Sligo really pulled off a huge community effort in delivering what was a really remarkable and memorable Fleadh, and this year we look forward to more of the same,” he said.
Anne Gorby, Head of Volunteering at Fleadh Cheoil 2015, adds: “The Fleadh is an incredible opportunity for Sligo to be showcased to the world. Last year, huge numbers of individuals and community groups got involved, offering to become volunteers for a day, and many of them helped out for the entire week. This is another opportunity for these, and for new people to get on board.”
With just 10 weeks to go before the biggest worldwide traditional Irish music festival returns to Sligo for the second consecutive year, the Fleadh team is busy putting together an major programme of concerts, workshops, classes, competitions and more.
The Fleadh Cheoil 2015 Open Day will take place on Friday 19th June at the Glasshouse Hotel in Sligo. Members of the public will be able to drop in at any time during the day to find out all they need to know about the Fleadh, from volunteering to offering accommodation, merchandise to Seachtain na hÉigse. There will also be lots of spot prizes and competitions, and the event will be broadcast live on Ocean FM between 9-11am.
The Fleadh programme itself will also be extended this year to include hundreds of events. Due to the success of the outdoor gig rig last year we have increased the number of days the gig rig will be in operation from 6 days to 8. This will mean that a free programme of events will take place every day from opening Sunday August 9th through the entire week until the Fleadh draws to a close the following Sunday August 16th. A second outdoor stage has also been added outside of City Hall on Quay St., and this will ensure that different parts of Sligo will be able to cater for the large numbers of visitors expected to descent on the north west for the week.
In addition, the hugely popular Fleadh TV, which was broadcast live on TG4 last year over 3 nights, will this year increase to 4 nights, from Thursday 13th to Sunday 16th inclusive. The shows will feature some of the biggest names in traditional Irish music, as well as provide a platform for many of the up and coming musicians who will become the names to look out for at this year’s Fleadh. RTÉ Radio will broadcast live from the Fleadh and will also record their 6-part television series. Raidió na Gaeltachta and Ocean FM will also broadcast live, and these, along with our other media partners – The Irish Independent and Sligo Champion, will ensure that the Fleadh message is delivered across print and digital platforms in the coming weeks.
