Sligo Commemorates 1916 with Music Rising Concert
April 24, 2016
‘Music Rising’, a concert commemorating the 1916 Centenary will take place in Stephen Street Car Park on Sunday April 24th, which is the actual 100th Anniversary date of the declaration of the Republic. The concert will feature an all-local line up, featuring some of Sligo’s top internationally touring musical acts, including Dervish, Rackhouse Pilfer, Moxie, NoCrows, Seamie O’Dowd & Kieran Quinn, Michael Rooney, and Sligo Folk Orchestra and the concert will close with a spectacular fireworks display.
The day of festivities opens at 12 noon with a host of family activities. An army parade, together with a number of marching bands commences on Lower Pearse Road and finishes with a civic reception for relatives of Sligo people who took part in the Easter Rising in Dublin 1916.
Events in the city centre riverside location of Stephen Street Car Park start at 2.30pm on the fabulous Stagecoaster used for Sligo Summer Festival and for the Fleadh. This is a state-of-the-art Gig-Rig with superb sound, stage lighting and a giant video screen. Safety, security and crowd control arrangements will be similar to the Fleadh to ensure an enjoyable and safe experience for everybody.
Opening the proceedings will be a reading of the 1916 Proclamation by young people selected from Sligo Schools at 2.30pm followed by the short Mise Éire film.
Michael Rooney, renowned composer and Coola Post Primary Vice-Principal, will lead an orchestra made up of young musicians from both traditional and classical backgrounds. The classical players have come through Sligo Academy of Music and will be joined by their musical director, Rosses Point native, Niamh Crowley. The traditional players selected by Michael are veterans of collaborations of this nature, having played in many performances of Michael’s compositions.
As darkness falls, the climax to a wonderful day of music and fun will be a fireworks display over the skies of the city at 9.30pm, sending young participants home happy while others go on to enjoy the later delights of MusicCitySligo.
Music Rising is a 1916 Easter Rising Centenary initiative by Sligo County Council’s 1916 Commemorative Committee and is funded by the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme.
