July 2, 2016 - July 10, 2016
Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy is a week-long Summer School of Irish traditional music, song and dance, incorporating tuition, lectures, recitals, concerts and céilithe.
Workshops and classes run from 10am to 1pm, from Monday to Saturday in uilleann pipes, whistle, flute, fiddle, concertina, button accordion, melodeon, banjo, harmonica and harp. There are workshops on set and step dancing and Conamara sean-nós dance, and seminars on traditional singing in the Irish and English language song traditions.
The afternoons are devoted to lectures on the various aspects of the Irish traditional music heritage and its connections with mainland Europe and North America. There are recitals each evening showcasing the instruments taught at the School, performances in traditional song and dance, and céilithe nightly.
Students who register for the full week for a fee of €140 are entitled to tuition, free admission to lectures, recitals and half-price admission to all céilithe; free admission to the conversational Irish language and Scots Gaelic classes, and free admission to the Eirinn is Alba concert.
The serious work of tuition is complemented by the festival atmosphere in hotels, pubs and on the streets, as students, locals and visitors celebrate Irish traditional music.
