Roads There have been considerable improvements in roads in the West in recent years and a number of key projects are continuing. These will continue to reduce journey times to other parts of the country.
Public Transport The Western Region is well served by public transport – bus and rail, public and private. Bus Éireann and private operators offer regular bus services across the West. Many private operators offer special weekend services for college students – travelling both from within and outside the region. There are also four main rail lines to Dublin:
Reduced journey times and more and better carriages are on the way. The Western Rail Corridor is due to re-open in phases. Phase 1 of the Western Rail Corridor was officially launched on 29th March 2010 and full schedules are in operation. This has opened up a direct train service between the cities of Galway and Limerick. Rail Freight is continuously improving with the announcement in May 2010 by International Warehousing and Transport Ltd. (IWT) of a third departure per week on their successful rail freight service between Dublin Port and Ballina in the North West of Ireland. The operation initially commenced in August 2009 running twice weekly between Dublin Port and Ballina and has increased to a third train from Monday 24th May 2010. The service will offer multi-client train services for new and existing customers and can cater for the full range of ISO containers.
