Hubert Butler (1900-1991), known as “Ireland’s Orwell”, is a world respected Irish writer who smuggled Jews from Vienna into Ireland before the war, then blew the lid on the Nazi-inspired genocide of Serbs in war-time Croatia. For his outspokenness he was branded a communist in 1950s Ireland. However, he went on to become an overnight publishing success – at the age of 85.
Leitrim filmmaker Johnny Gogan toured this critically acclaimed film over the past year in Ireland and Britain under the title of Hubert Butler Witness To The Future. RTE have now picked up the TV hour version which will screen August 9th 9.30pm on RTE under the title of The Nuncio and the Writer
