Seminar to Focus on Employment Law Challenges facing Organisations in 2010

“Many small to medium Irish businesses are leaving themselves wide open to litigation by introducing unilateral changes to contracts of employment or by not following a fair and transparent redundancy process,” says Derek Mc Kay, managing director, Adare Human Resource Management, a joint presenter with Career Decisions, Limerick, at Shannon Chamber’s Employment Law breakfast seminar, which will be held on Thursday, 11 March 2010 at Westpark Business Campus, Shannon, from 8.00–10.30am.

“The objective of this seminar is to present a best-practice approach to change/restructuring/downsizing and to give employers a proven methodology that will minimise business disruption and smooth the process for all involved,” says Miriam Magner Flynn, managing director of Career Decisions.

“The employment landscape continues to undergo dramatic change and is characterised by restructuring, downsizing and redundancies.  All companies face change at some stage and how that change is handled can have a significant impact on a company’s reputation, brand and value. Getting it right is not easy. Getting it wrong can have far reaching consequences on the long-term health and success of the business.

“We will focus on the five factors vital to its success and will share our expertise on how to restructure and revitalise a workforce for new economic times,” Ms Magner Flynn adds.

The National Employment Rights Authority’s (NERA) telephone information service provided information to over 150,000 people during 2009 – an increase of over 30% on the 2008 figure of 115,000, which in turn was an increase of 30% on the previous year. This increased demand was noted in NERA’s recently issued publication ‘Review of 2009’. Redundancies, holiday entitlements, terms of employment and payment of wages represented the highest categories of queries received by the NERA.

“Employers need to keep abreast of legislative requirements in this area; that’s the purpose of this seminar – to provide information on current and relevant legislative information,” says Helen Downes, chief executive, Shannon Chamber.

Over the last eighteen months, Adare Human Resource Management has delivered employment law seminars across the country specifically aimed at supporting organisations in the area of redundancy and changing terms and conditions and is one of Ireland’s leading HR service providers.

Career Decisions is a specialist provider of Outplacement/Career Transition Programmes with offices in Limerick and Dublin.  It has a 16-year proven track record of supporting organisations before, during and after a downsizing/restructuring process.

“This is a highly valuable opportunity for those concerned with the employment and management of staff to stay up to date on key areas of employment law and best practice. Apart from their time, there is no cost to our members,” Ms Downes concludes.
