However, even in the current economic downturn, property is still cheaper to buy or rent in the West.

• The average price* of a new property in the West of Ireland ranges from €242,000 in Galway City to €154,000 in Co Roscommon. In Dublin City it is €306,000.
• Rental** is also cheaper as a 2-bed apartment will cost you €525 per month in Connaught - compared with €1,086 in Dublin 6. In Galway City rental cost is €786 a month.
