Bio-energy

Bio-energy is energy derived from plant matter. It is therefore a renewable energy resource.

There are three categories of Bio-energy focused on in the Western region under the RASLRES programme are:

• Wood Energy
• Reed Canary Grass
• Seaweed (Kelp)

With an extensive Atlantic-facing coastline, suitable climatic conditions for growth, the Western region is well placed to lead the way in Bio-energy production in Ireland.

• Helping ensure the security and diversity of energy supply.
• Greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
• New opportunities for farmers.
• Employment generation in rural areas and enhancement of the local economy.
