Campus Camp is an innovative new summer camp by Summer Camp Ireland and delivered in partnership with IT Sligo.
Running this summer from July 11th to July 23rd on-site at IT Sligo, Campus Camp is designed to let teenagers test drive every aspect of college life; from campus living, to lectures, socializing, and sports.
Aimed at 14-17 year olds, students participate in a program that combines college classes, social activities, creative programming, travel, recreation and sports. Campus Camp provides students with the chance to make new friends and experience pre-college living and learning before actually attending college. It helps achieve success in secondary school and prepare for college.
Particpants can choose either the residential or non-residential option, enabling teenagers from the North West who don’t require accommodation to also attend.
Not your regular Summer Camp What makes this so different from other camps is that it introduces teens to a range of subjects taught in third level education. They will attend engaging lectures and presentations that are specially designed for their level and age.
The academic programme includes presentations from business, science, engineering and humanities including great field trips that will illustrate their relevance from a real life perspective. It will help them get a better understanding of what course to pick and a greater likelihood of a positive experience of college life.
Gordon Ryan, Head of Business Development at IT Sligo points out; “The chance to test drive college life is a great opportunity for pre-Leaving Cert teenagers. Seeing the connection between their secondary school studies, third level and the career paths this leads to puts them ahead of the curve in terms of both personal and academic development. Living, learning and meeting all the other nationalities on IT Sligo campus is a wonderful experience that will help them mature, develop and grow.”
The activity programme in the camp is also exceptional. Students go scuba-diving, horse-riding, surfing, sea-angling, hill walking, eagle flying as well as arts and crafts, sports, monitored discos, and trips around the country.
Angela Currid, a parent from Sligo said ”My daughter attended the summer camp and had a fun packed day each day from surfing, horse riding, mountain climbing, drama, film making, etc. There was a huge range of activities to choose from. The integration with children from other countries was excellent and helped with her personal development. This camp is a must for teenagers.”
According to the course co-ordinator, John Joe Callaghan, “The most exciting aspect of the programme is the opportunity for participants to interact with students from all over the world. There are currently over 130 students registered from Italy, France, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Switzerland, Korea, the US and Ireland.”
So it's clear why the Summer Camp Ireland motto is "Come home and meet the World".
