Cairde Summer Festival, Sligo July 3rd – 10th

Cirque de legumeThe scene is set for another week of frantic fun as Cairde Summer Festival 2011 hits the streets of Sligo with its best line up ever featuring incredible music from all over the globe, theatre, puppetry, family and children’s gigs and the unmissable day long celebration of all communities in Sligo:ParkFest!


The Shelley River Boat Race Sunday 3rd July starting at 7.30pm on JFK Parade and ending somewhere in the mid Atlantic! This will be a massive outdoor celebration of Sligo’s Shelley River with a highly charged model boat race on the river itself and free street entertainment and music along the banks.

More fun for kids of all ages follows on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th July as the internationally acclaimed interactive shadow puppet comedy Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones shows at The Model at 12 pm and 7 pm daily. In keeping with its theatrical tradition Cairde 2011 presents a staging of Chekov’s sublime one-act farce The Bear from Monday 4th to Thursday 7th July at 1 pm daily upstairs in The Trades Club on Castle Street.


As evening draws in on Monday and Tuesday Sligo’s very own pocket-sized circus hit Cirque de Légume returns for some very exclusive Sligo dates before a summer tour to the UK Canada, and New York City! They can be found upstairs in McGarrigles on both evenings from 10pm onwards.

If Irish traditional with a hint of American bluegrass and folk is your thing then you’d want to be heading to McGarrigles on Thursday 7th July as one of the nation’s most unique bands, Tupelo take to the stage upstairs at 9pm. On Friday 8th July Cairde offers you a rare musical treat presenting two of the world’s most inspirational musicians Yungchen Lhamo and Dónal Lunny for what promises to be a unique and spellbinding performance at The Hawks Well Theatre.


Cairde Festival The final weekend of Cairde features cutting edge music, art and fun for all the family in the heart of Sligo town. Things kick off at 10pm on Friday night 8th July night upstairs in Mc Garrigles with a gig that will allow you to navigate through a multitude of musical styles while having an exceptionally good time! Enter the dynamic musical trio Barefoot who bring together a unique blend of original and traditional musical influences that range from Traditional Irish through Balkan, Indian classical, African to Austrian folk. The Cork-based German Klaus Vormehr, has been composing and recording electronic music for 20 years here in Ireland. One of the founders of Sligo’s infamous Dub Club in the early 90’s he will be performing his first gig in the town since then.

If you like shopping and in particular if you like cool retro and vintage gear at cool and vintage prices you’d better get yourself to the Stephen’s Street car park on Saturday 9th July for The Frivolous Fare for retro clothing, books, jewellery, prints, buttons, pins, chairs, various home and house wares and all while enjoying cool tunes and sipping tasty teas and coffees. From 12noon to 7pm on Sunday 10th July, join us for PARKFEST the annual day long celebration of music, performance, food, arts and crafts in Sligo’s Peace Park! This year’s Park Fest features music by Oliver Alcorn, Seamie O’Dowd, Wurlitzer, The JPTrio, The Bahh Band, No Crows; with circus performances, a range of children’s art workshops and global arts, craft and food stands.
