Jack B. Yeats Exhibition at The Model in Sligo extended until June 12th

Jack B. YeatsSince The Outsider opened in February, thousands of people have visited the historic survey of the work of Ireland’s finest painter, Jack B. Yeats, at The Model in Sligo.  Visitors have come from the four corners of Ireland, the UK and even the USA to see the first major Yeats’ show in 40 years

Due to this unprecedented response, the closing of the exhibition will be staggered so that audiences will be able to experience the core works until 12 June.  The Model will also welcome the newly appointed Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan T.D., who will make an official visit to inaugurate The Model building and see the Yeats’ show on June 9th.

The celebrated exhibition is co-curated by The Model’s Emer McGarry and Brian O’Doherty, the internationally acclaimed artist, critic and theorist who knew Yeats in his final years and has written extensively about the painter.

Several of the works in The Outsider are drawn from the Niland Collection of art, housed in The Model, which now boasts 49 Jack B. Yeats works, and a further 19 works from his father John, two works by his sister, four by his nice Anne Yeats and one by his wife Mary Cottenham Yeats. The Model is delighted to be in a position to fulfil the long held dream of the late Nora Niland, the founder of The Niland Collection, by staging this comprehensive survey of Yeats’ work in his hometown of Sligo. In this exhibition works from The Niland Collection are presented together with Yeats finest paintings from the collections of The National Gallery of Ireland, The Crawford Art Gallery, Limerick City Gallery of Art as well as many of Ireland’s finest private art collections.

During the exhibition’s final weeks, The Model is holding some special events to support The Outsider, including a talk with writer Dermot Healy and artist Seán McSweney on May 7th.  The exhibition will also be the focus of a special tour arranged by the Sligo Yeats Society, which will be given by the Society’s Stella Mews on Thursday 19 May at 11am.

Due to unprecedented demand The Model has extended the scheduled monthly Curator’s Tours to a weekly basis.   Tours will be led by Emer McGarry and will take place every Wednesday from May 4th at 1pm. Tours last just 30 minutes so that attendees can take them on while on their lunch breaks.
