New Opportunities & Effective Networking in Tourism

The presenter is Prof. Jim Deegan, Director of the National Centre for Tourism Policy Studies (NCTPS), University of Limerick and Professor of Tourism Policy.   Prof. Deegan is an economist by training and his research interests and publications are in all facets of public policy for tourism and he has undertaken project research and consultancy on behalf of the Irish Government, The European Commission, The World Bank and many public and private sector organisations He will discuss the trends and opportunities in the tourism sector as well as the importance of networking for innovation.

New Opportunities for Farm Resources

This seminar features the presenters from the RTE programme "Higher Ground" Paul McCarthy and Peter Young.  They will be looking at the opportunities for entrepreneurship on the farm.  Peter Young writes a weekly column in the Farmer’s Journal on innovation, farm diversification and the challenges of starting and running a small business in rural Ireland.  As editor of the on-off farm pages in the Irish Farmers Journal he regularly features small businesses and focuses on how they address the challenges such as distribution, finance and most importantly profitability.  Paul Mc Carthy is a Rural Business Specialist with Teagasc, a role where he has mentored and guided many early stage start-ups through to trading profitably.  His main areas of focus are innovation, practical business planning and the setting and achieving of profit-driven goals.

This Information seminar on opportunities and supports for investing in enterprise with Laura Lynch from Mazars, and Gerry Mackey from the Business Angels Partnership. Laura Lynch is a Director with Mazars, Galway, specialising in taxation.  An Associate of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Irish Taxation Institute, Laura has more than 10 years experience as an advisor, specialising in particular in providing financial advice to start up companies, entrepreneurs and investors, including business purchase and sale, investment strategy and retirement and succession planning.  Gerry Mackey is the regional manager of the Halo Business Angel Partnership in the BMW region.  The Business Angel Partnership is working to develop and foster the growth of private equity and business angel activity, by matching private investors with pre-screened investment opportunities in start-up, early stage and developing businesses

Pitching Your Business Plan to Investors

Event hosted by: HPSU Skillnet and WESTBIC Business Innovation Centre
One to one sessions are being offered to entrepreneurs with a completed business plans who are actively seeking investment for their business.   Entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to rehearse their pitch to potential investors and will get valuable feedback on what investors are looking for and how best to structure their presentations.   Laura Lynch of Mazars and Gerry Mackey of the Halo Business Angel Partnership are experienced in working with both entrepreneurs and investors and can advise on the type of questions posed by investors and the information they will be looking for.

Digital Media and Creative Industries in Mayo

Hosted by: Mayo County Development Board, WESTBIC Business Innovation Centre and CISNET Creative Industries Network
This seminar will focus on the trends and the commercial opportunities in digital media and the creative industries, for entrepreneurs and professionals in Co. Mayo.  Dr. Stephen Brennan, Director of Marketing at the Digital Hub, will give an overview of the Digital Media sector in Ireland and internationally and will give a flavour of the commercial opportunities coming down the line.  He will also outline the experience of The Digital Hub in fostering collaboration and supporting the growth of the digital sector nationally.  Paul Cummins, CEO, Telegael will outline his experiences in running an international digital entertainment company from the West of Ireland, and his advice for those interested in this sector. John Coll, Director of Community & Enterprise with Mayo Co. Council, will chair the event and will also introduce the CISNET Creative Industries Networking Project, whereby Mayo Co Council are partnering with WESTBIC Business Innovation Centre to link Co. Mayo with other creative regions in Europe.

Spirit of Entrepreneurship

SEMINAR, 6pm – 8.30pm, Innovation in Business Centre at GMIT, Castlebar
Hosted by: Innovation in Business Centre, GMIT
Two leading entrepreneur businessmen, Johnathon Ruane from Eventovate and Leonard Moran from Ovagen, will address this year’s Enterprise Evening hosted by the Innovation in Business Centre (IiBC) at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) Castlebar.  The event titled “Spirit of Entrepreneurship” takes place in the GMIT Castlebar campus.  Also, from 6pm the IiBC client companies will showcase their product offerings allowing people to view the types of businesses formed since the opening of the centre.  Eventovate were listed on the 2010 Techcrunch Euro Top 100 (one of only 3 Irish Companies) and on the 2010 Irish Times Tech Top 50 companies. In May 2009, Eventovate were awarded the BOI Bright Ideas  Challenge Award for New Business Start Ups.  The second speaker, Leonard Moran, sold his former company BioLabs in 2002 to US Group Charles River Laboratories for €25 million plus a €3 million earn out. Prior to this, Leonard spent 8 years with the British Medical Research Council (MRC) where he focused on clinical research and specifically breeding SPF animals. Ovagen have raised investment of €12m to date. Both speakers will share their experiences of establishing and running a business, including the many challenges and lessons learned along the way.

FRIDAY 1ST OCTOBER
Leadership in Business Programme

PROGRAMME (Module 1 of 5),  Commencing 9.30am, Civic Centre, Belmullet

This programme focuses on leadership and strategy development and is targeted at CEOs and Senior Management of SMEs in Co. Mayo. The programme consists of five modules running fortnightly from Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd October.  The five modules will cover Leadership, Innovation, Strategy, Marketing and Sales. Each module runs over the full day on Friday and a half day on Saturday morning.  Each module will be delivered by trainers with a high level of expertise in that area, and will incorporate a presentation from a successful Irish entrepreneur or strategist.  The programme costs €590 per company and this covers attendance by up to two employees.

Developments in the Wind Energy Sector

This seminar will look at recent developments in the Wind Energy sector.  Guest speakers will include Michael Walsh, CEO of the Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA) and Michael Horan, a Mayo based entrepreneur.  Michael Walsh joined the IWEA in November 2007. Prior to joining he was manager of market readiness at EirGrid where he supported the introduction of the Single Electricity Market on the island of Ireland.   Michael Horan will talk about his experiences in the area of Micro Wind Generation.
