Print

The Burial of Patrick Ireland One of Ireland’s leading contemporary arts centres, The Model in Sligo, will host a symposium exploring how the arts can challenge sectarianism on Saturday, 11th September.  The day-long event – ‘The Outsider: Sectarianism and Identity in Ireland Today’ complements an ongoing exhibition at The Model: ‘The Living Ginger’, which explores Jack B. Yeats’ fascination with those who lived on the margins of society.

Taking the work of the Yeats brothers as its touchstone, this symposium examines shared histories and the shaping of political identities in Ireland, with a particular empasis on the role of art, literature, the media and popular culture

Glasgow-based Irish writer and curator Francis McKee will chair the symposium, while a number of well-known arts personalities will speak at the event, including:

·       Brian O’Doherty, the Irish-born artist, critic and theorist, who – in response to the tragic events of Bloody Sunday – assumed the identity of Patrick Ireland and made work under that pseudonym for 36 years.
·       Dr. Mike Cronin, an historian and Academic Director of Boston College-Ireland, who has written extensively on Irish politics, language and literature.
·       Susan McKay, a journalist and award-winning author from Derry, who is currently Director of the National Women’s Council of Ireland.
·       Duncan Campbell, an Irish artist and filmmaker, based in Glasgow, who has produced a body of work rooted in Northern Ireland, including ‘Make It New John’, a film telling the story of Belfast’s DeLorean plant, which is currently showing at The Model.

The symposium will begin at 10am and will close at 5pm.  Brian O’Doherty will deliver the keynote address at 10.45am.
