Wild West AthlanticSligo's hard-pressed tourism industry is to benefit as part of a total investment of over €13 million in two major new initiatives designed to boost visitor numbers over the next two years.

Sligo will be a key hub in Ireland's biggest tourism event in 2013, ' The Gathering', as thousands of Sligo people abroad will be encouraged ' home' to participate in local festivals throughout the year. Similar schemes will operate in other parts of the country and the launch will take place on St. Patrick's Day.

The second project sees the introduction of a 'Wild Atlantic Drive', a themed package driving trail from Donegal, through Sligo, and on to West Cork.

The Chief Executive of Fáilte Ireland Shaun Quinn said the initiatives had "huge potential" for Sligo and the Northwest region.

Mr. Quinn was speaking at a Failte Ireland industry briefing at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ballincar, on Monday.

The C.E.O. said Sligo people who were living and working throughout the world would be encouraged to return in 2013 as part of a project receiving over €10 million in investment and marketing.

John Concannon Director of Market Development said ' The Gathering' presented a "massive opportunity" for Sligo to reconnect with those abroad and added it was hoped to work with the Chamber of Commerce, local authroties, LEADER, Town Twinning groups and others to promote it.

Kevin Kidney, Destination Development, said the Wild Athlantic Drive was also another important development for Sligo. It is hoped that the route will be operational before the tourist season starts in June.

Sligo is also to participate in a new national Tourism Town Awards as local communities are encouraged to support the tourist industry and lure more visitors to the area.
