Good news on jobs front in Mayo

A multi-million euro project that could create hundreds of jobs in Claremorris will move a step closer this month when a planning application is lodged with Mayo Co Council.

The promoters of the proposed Bio Park have been working closely with the council over a number of months and are now putting the finishing touches to their application.

A 20-acre site at Kilbeg, near the town, has already been identified for the project.

Local man JP Prendergast is one of the key promoters behind the project. Mr Prendergast explained that the promoters are prepared to pump millions of euro into the local economy.

A full environmental impact statement (EIS) has already been completed on the Bio Park project. The Bio Park would comprise three elements: a combined heat and power (CHP) building, a medical device building and a pharmaceutical building

“We based the plant on the recommendations of that report and a plant of this size is ideal for a town like Claremorris.

“The raw materials can be sourced locally and the steam can then be supplied locally into the future,” said Mr Prendergast. “Imperative Energy is involved in the project and they have a shareholding in Greenbelt. As a result, all of the timber can be sourced locally.

“The steam that will be produced can be run 10 miles from the plant and therefore this opens the door for further such development in the area.

“We will have energy resources and therefore be at a major advantage to physically attract even more employment into the town,” he said.

“We are ready to make a heavy investment in this project because we believe in it and we know it will be a massive boost to Claremorris and indeed the county,” said Mr Prendergast.
