Ballymote based Quickcrop.ie, will launch this month in the UK. The phenomenally successful home vegetable growing business has shown how trading on the internet can be a solution to creating an income while living in the North West. A sound business idea, a lot of hard graft, and support from Tradelinks Programme, has already made Quickcrop a thriving business in Ireland.
Quickcrop.ie, was set up by Niall McAllister and Andrew Davidson to address a gap in the market for a website that not only supplies amateur vegetable growers’ products all over Ireland, but that also gives free advice and ideas to these growers. Quickcrop.ie sells flat packed raised beds, compost and soil, young vegetable plants and over 500 related products and services all over Ireland.
The wealth of free advice and information on the website is a key ‘extra’ for online customers that informs the success of this company. Lots of pop up hints and short videos on the website give advice on what to choose and when to order it, for a large or small garden, a balcony apartment or even a school garden.
In conjunction with Bord Bia/Agri Aware initiative, this year Quickcrop supplied 1600 schools around the country with a raised bed growing kit and a video to show what to do. Niall comments: ‘Ireland has a fabulous climate for growing food. Producing your own food gives a great sense of empowerment. Couple that with the health benefits of highly nutritious food, fresh air and exercise and you have a very important cog in the health of the nation.’
The company will launch Quickcrop in the UK next month. Niall explains the role of Tradelinks at this important juncture. ‘Participating in the Tradelinks Programme allowed us to undertake extensive research in the UK and Northern Irish markets, informing the level of investment we are making in the UK market. In Ireland only 7% of people produce some of their own food. In the UK that figure is 23%.’ Quickcrop are set to tap into this lucrative market.
