Workshops and seminars countywide (19-23 September)

James Horan, Mayo Senior Football Manager, performed the official launch of Mayo Ideas Week 2011 at the Museum of Country Life, Turlough Park House, Castlebar on, Thursday 1st September. The guest speakers were Peter Hynes, Mayo County Manager and Art O’Suilleabháin, Manager of Mayo Education Centre.

Mayo Ideas Week is a co-ordinated series of idea generation and entrepreneurship events in venues all over the county. It is hosted by Mayo Ideas Lab through its partner agencies. Mayo Ideas Week runs from Monday 19 to Friday 23 September and consists of seminars and workshops to suit those already in business as well as those thinking of taking the plunge. The focus is on industry sectors which show potential for growth in the county. Most events are free of charge but some require advance booking. Each event is organised and sponsored by one of the partner agencies.

Inspirational speakers include household names such as Presidential candidate Sean Gallagher of Dragon’s Den fame and entrepreneur John Concannon of JFC Manufacturing in Tuam.

Speaking at the launch Peter Hynes was enthusiastic about Mayo Ideas Week saying, “I am not aware of any other county offering an equivalent venture. In these challenging times we need to innovate, to be open to new ideas, to encourage new ideas, and to encourage people to do things in a new way. The County Council is supportive of anything which adds to the social, cultural or economic life within Mayo”. He encouraged people of all ages to attend Mayo Ideas Week events, especially those in education, whether at student or teaching level.

James Horan drew a comparison between Mayo Ideas Week and building a successful sports team saying, “We are both building pride in our county and changing how Mayo is perceived countrywide. We are creating an environment where ideas, talent and skill will flourish”.

Seamus McCormack, Area Manager, WESTBIC said, “It’s a very opportune time in the context of the current economic downturn to look at the development of our own resources and see what business opportunity exists”.

Sean O’Coisdealbha, Feidhmeannach Forbartha, Údarás na Gaeltachta said the development agencies are looking forward to the opportunity of meeting companies and entrepreneurs during the week. “Our doors are always open for entrepreneurs with good ideas”, he said.

The inaugural Mayo Ideas Week was an unprecedented success last year and looks set to emulate that again this year. The 2011 programme has been specifically designed to help businesses deal with the very challenging circumstances facing them. This includes support for existing businesses as well as entrepreneurs in start up situations. Workshops and seminars on accessing finance, targeting new markets, leadership and strategy are all included as well as training on successful tendering for public sector contracts.
