Mondello Park ‘Become A Racing Driver’ competition winner Sean Hynes continued his highly impressive debut season with a storming drive at Kirkistown Co. Down to take his first ever podium finish.
Sean Hynes from Foxford leads veteran racer Brian Hearty through the chicane on the final lap, to claim second place in the Formula Sheane race at Kirkistown, Belfast on Saturday. Hynes prize of a season of Formula Sheane races has seen him compete free of charge in the Irish Formula Sheane championship throughout 2011. Driving with the support of Mondello Park and Ireland’s most successful race car manufacturer, Sheane Cars, the Foxford native has improved with every outing to the point where he is now regularly competing with the front runners. At Kirkistown’s round seven, of a nine race schedule, Hynes qualified fifth but found himself down the field at the start following a slow getaway and a trip across the grass at turn two. The rookie battled back to fifth before an incident brought out the safety car and he then climbed to third on the re-start despite damage to his front wing during his first lap excursion. Over the remaining laps the Mayo man proved that his lack of experience is no handicap as he battled with former champion Brian Hearty, the most experienced driver in the field, eventually taking second place from him. At the flag Hynes was just three second off the winner and was delighted to take his first ever podium finish. The Formula Sheane championship now moves on to the Mondello Park’s International track for its final two rounds on September 17th and 18th. The International loop is where it all began for Hynes with his first Formula Sheane experience at the Mondello Park Motor Racing School and he will be hoping to finish his year on a high with at least another podium position on his return. The 2011 Become A Racing Driver competition is now underway. Drivers hoping to follow in the footsteps of Sean Hynes can find out more at www.mondellopark.ie/driversearch. |
