With Ironman Ireland 70.3 almost upon us here is what is happening next week in Galway;
The event will kick of on Thursday the 1st of September with the official launch of IRONMAN Ireland 70.3 by the Minister of State for the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport Mr. Michael Ring T.D. and Galway Mayor Hildegard Naughton. Friday will see the opening of the Expo and food Village at the Salthill Park were over 25 exhibitors will be on site from Friday 12pm right though until Sunday at 6pm. Registration for the athletes will also begin on Friday at Leisureland from 9am– 6pm. The Magnetti’s Pasta Party will take place on Friday from 6-9pm at the Galway Bay Hotel where there will also be a Q & A session with the top professional athletes.
Saturday will see the Expo and Registration re open. The official swim practice session will take place at Salthill’s Lady Beach at 9am and race briefing with commence at 3.30pm in Leisureland.
Then on Sunday, the big day has arrived! The race will begin at 7am at the Ladies beach in Salthill which will see 2500 athletes taking part in a 1.9km swim in the crystal-clear waters of Galway Bay, followed by a challenging 90km cycle course, leading them out to the scenic Connemara region and back into Galway City where the competitors will take on a grueling 21.1km run along a spectator-friendly route taking in the Spanish Arch with the finish line in Salthill Park.
Later that evening at 6pm The Awards ceremony, After party and Volunteers party will take place in the Galway Bay Hotel. Food will be provided for all athletes and entertainment will be provide by a Hybrid of the Furry Village and Trad on the Prom followed by a D.J. until the early hours.
Hotspots for the weekend:
- Salthill Park – Friday 2nd of September to Sunday 4th
- Daily entertainment provide by ilovesalthill.com that will see Bouncing Castles, inflatable adventure games, face painting, and a host of other family entertainment.
- Moycullen on Sunday 4th will be a hive of activity with a barbeque, surf simulator, MBW Bike Stunt Show vintage cars and much more.
- The residents of Oughterard are also getting out in force to welcome the cyclists as they pass though the village on the way out and back. Entertainment will also be provided in the village.
- The Spanish Arch on the Sunday will the focal point for the run section of the event and as such the Latin quarter have organized entertainment. There will be a media wall that will be beaming the cycle and swim part of the race into the Spanish Arch.
