This August, Lúnasa, a new summertime celebration of the arts, will take place at The Model in Sligo.
The Lúnasa Arts Festival features an exciting programme of exhibitions, music, film, comedy, visual arts, education and outreach events, free lunchtime tours of the exhibitions and a free outdoor art project on the grounds of The Model. The Festival features music appearances from Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club, The Gloaming (a new super-group of Ireland’s foremost traditional music artists) and Sligo’s own Túcan, as well as comedy from Joe Rooney and Patrick McDonnell, a special summer season of surf films at The Model Cinema and painting workshops with Artist-in-Residence Etienne Zack.
The Gloaming will appear on Wednesday August 24 and features Thomas Bartlett, Dennis Cahill, Martin Hayes, Iarla Ó Lionaird and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, who arrive in Sligo fresh from their international debut at the National Concert Hall, as well as Sligo’s own outstanding, genre-defying Túcan on Saturday August 20th, who have a long relationship with The Model.
The visual arts programme features a survey exhibition by award-winning, film-maker Harun Farocki, with complex film installations that analyse surveillance, war technologies and even world-cup football. Alongside this exhibition is The Celtic Twilight, a Niland Collection Exhibition, and a special exhibition entitled The World of Jack B Yeats, which features works from every phase of Yeats’ career including a new acquisition of Yeats’ work, A Nor’western Town. Films in the festival include surf films; the Endless Summer, Big Wednesday and local produced Waveriders, together with a surprise screening as selected by pro-surfer and artist Easkey Britton.
Craic in the BOX, The Model’s comedy series, will feature Joe Rooney and Patrick McDonnell, both of Father Ted fame and Etienne Zack, The Model’s current Artist in Residence, will conduct art workshops for youth and seniors.
