The Brehon Law Symposium, which concluded in Knockranny House Hotel on Friday 13 May was a great success according to the organisers, Mayo County Council and the Western Development Commission (WDC).
The symposium involved 3 days of legal and commercial engagement between practitioners on both sides of the Atlantic, where the opportunities for increased commercial activity between the two countries were highlighted. Speaking at the Symposium’s gala dinner, an Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, said that the symposium “offered the opportunity for the legal barriers to trade between our two nations to be overcome”. The Taoiseach also informed his audience that “Ireland’s stance on its corporation tax rate was non negotiable” and that Ireland remained “open for business”. Corporation Tax was a topical issue during the Symposium. Gerry Kilcommins, VP Global Vascular Systems at Medtronic, and President of the American Chamber of Commerce Ireland said that “any movement on Ireland’s corporation tax rate, no matter how small would be unacceptable as it would introduce uncertainty into the market”. Kilcommins went on to say that “Ireland should look to its competitors in Aisa where the Corporation tax is zero”. President of the Brehon Law Society, Joseph Kelly Junior, in his concluding remarks deemed the symposium an outstanding success that went way beyond the expectations of the visiting delegates. He invited all participants back to Philadelphia in 2012 for the second annual Symposium. Image Caption: An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD, speaking at the Brehon Symposium
