LookWest.ie is delighted that three of the five finalists in this year's national Community Bursary competition are from Ireland's Western Region. The Bursary will recognise and reward an idea that will provide a much needed facility or makes a significant improvement to the landscape of your local community. The winning community will receive €30,000 to help bring their idea to life. You can vote from Saturday 19th June to 12pm Thursday 24th June, so please support these great projects by voting here.
Mayo Entrant: The Erris No-Name Club, Erris/Belmullet Co. Mayo Erris No-Name Club and Mayo County Council have been shortlisted for their project to provide a Multi-Use Games Area, Refurbishment and redevelopment of the existing dilapidated tennis courts to provide a new artificial all weather court, teenager area (specialist teenager orientated equipment to be provided), boccia court etc. The Erris No-Name club is an organisation whose aim is to provide a safe space and alternative social life for teenagers without the use of drugs or alcohol. Currently we have 50 Host and Hostesses and 172 Teenage members giving a total membership of 222 from across the barony of Erris. Vote for Co Mayo here. Donegal Entrant: Tidy Towns Bundoran, Bundoran, Co. Donegal. Tidy Towns Bundoran, with the support of the local community, would like to create a sensory garden especially aimed at providing a peaceful haven for all but with especial regard to wheelchair users and children and elderly with sensory and mental disabilities. The Sensory Garden would have colourful and scented plants and different textures in paths, plants and surfaces to stimulate all senses and memory. The garden would serve a purpose in its final execution but more importantly would also provide a great opportunity for integration, social interaction and rehabilitation as its creation, planning, design, planting and care would involve community members of differing abilities. It is envisaged that the following groups (at least) would be involved in the creation of the garden: Bundoran Tidy Towns, Acquired Brain Injury Ireland and the Irish Wheelchair Association. Vote for Co Donegal here. Galway Entrant: Ballinasloe, County Galway. We have a wonderful Town Hall Theatre that has served us well in Balliansloe in recent years. However, the back stage rooms had become so dilapidated and worn looking, and it is our proposal that this area is refurbished and upgraded both inside and out. In such uncertain times our community, young and old need to be able to use the medium of drama and acting as an outlet for emotions, thoughts and dreams that they might not have otherwise have had a means to express, and to do so as a united community. The people of Ballinasloe really feel that this project would give such a badly needed lift to Balliansloe people and would be a wonderful resource for our future generations to come. Vote for Co Galway here. Come on, support the West, vote now!
