‘No money involved, no political agenda. A group of like-minded people who just wanted to give a snapshot of Galway at that particular time.’ These were the comments of Reg Gordon, a Galway-based photographer and the driving force behind 48 Hours Magazine, an online arts and community magazine recently created in Galway. You can also see a LookWest.ie case study of Reg Gordon here. The online magazine was created start to finish, as the title suggests, over 48 hours by a team of writers, photographers and designers who all volunteered their time. The team mostly comprised of staff from local newspapers who assembled together over the last weekend of March. ![]() The magazine, aimed to highlight arts and the community in Galway – such as music, fashion, food, theatre and art. An excellent magazine, it contained feature articles; interviews with Gugai of the Róisín Dubh, DJ Kit Kola, the Galway City Council’s Gary McMahon, artist Aideen Barry, etc; and stunning photography of life in and the sights of Galway city. The team assembled at midnight on Friday 27th March for their first meeting and worked together all through the weekend to have the magazine published by midnight on Sunday 29th March. Reg also commented “What mostly impressed me was how so many individuals delivered so much more than I expected as they were given an opportunity to really push their creative boundaries, compared to their regular day-jobs.” The 48 Hours team felt this gave them an opportunity to showcase Galway’s talent and that you don’t need to be in Dublin, London or New York to be on the pulse of the contemporary arts scene. Such was the success of the project, Reg and the team are now hoping to create a print version. Well-known Galway band, the Saw Doctors, will play a one-off, intimate, concert at Kelly’s Bar in Galway on June 2, with all proceeds going to publishing fund View the magazine here. |
