Sligo focus for LookWest.ie Enterprise Campaign

-- Press Release --

The Western Development Commission’s (WDC) LookWest.ie advertising and publicity campaign is, this week, focussing on Sligo. In partnership with Sligo County Council, the campaign will aim to attract enterprises and individuals to County Sligo. It will target business owners in the Greater Dublin Area, the rest of the country and the Irish communities abroad, as well as encouraging Sligo people to promote the county to friends and family who live away.

The Sligo business featuring in the advertising campaign is AVA Audiovisual, the audio visual and acoustic engineering services company established by husband and wife team Brian and Odilon Hunt in 1995. AVA Audiovisual provides technical facilities and staff for conferences and events, as well as specialist acoustic monitoring and consultancy services. Clients range from multi national companies to SME’s to Government departments, and the company’s ethos is that the human factor driving the advanced technology is the most important element of service.

The overall LookWest.ie campaign focuses on a different local authority area over a seven-week period, and was launched by Éamon Ó Cuív TD, Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and Gillian Buckley, CEO of the WDC. Ms Buckley said, “The focus of the LookWest.ie campaign this year is on enterprise and entrepreneurs by highlighting some of the many successful companies who have decided to locate in the region, attracted by the availability of a highly skilled workforce and a truly attractive business environment.“

According to Sligo County Manager Hubert Kearns, “Businesses and people want to be where there is a wide range of infrastructure and facilities. In this context Sligo is very well positioned as a key centre for economic growth in the northwest, and the construction of major infrastructural projects sends a positive message to existing and potential enterprises that the Local Authorities will deliver for Sligo. It is proven that successful regions are built around attractive and vibrant cities, and businesses will invariably be attracted to places with high quality infrastructure and services. Supports are also available from many of the agencies represented on the County Development Board for business development such as Sligo County Enterprise Board, Enterprise Ireland and IDA.

“The National Spatial Strategy provided an excellent opportunity to articulate a vision for Sligo and will also facilitate the creation of a ‘critical mass’ which will generate further investment of technology and talent. I also expect the development of cultural facilities to be a driving force and will boost Sligo’s reputation as a cultural and tourism destination,” he added.

Ian Brannigan, Development Manager at the WDC says that one of the real drivers for this year’s LookWest.ie 2008 campaign has been the increasing evidence that people are more than ever valuing quality of life as a determinant for where they live and work. “Our research shows that the Western region has this in spades; 67% of businesses surveyed stated that the Western Region had a better work life balance.”
He added, “This week the focus is on Sligo and we will showcase a different area each week for the duration of the campaign. The types of highly skilled sustainable businesses showcased typify the innate dynamism of the West and demonstrate how the region is adapting to global demands.”
