"When MBNA opened their offices here it gave myself and my husband an ideal opportunity to start a new life. I now work as the recruitment co-ordinator for MBNA/Bank of America." "We own our own house in the countryside and the property would not be within an affordable range either on Ireland's East coast, or in any area that would in commuting distance for the Head office of MBNA Bank of America in Chester." Laura sees the advantages as fantastic house prices, good work life balance, good distance to the coast at Strandhill in Sligo, more time together, less time travelling to and from work. She regards food as a bit more expensive than in Wales but feels that this is outweighed by the fact that you don't pay council tax or water rates which she would have to pay in Wales. Roads are on Laura's short list of disadvantages of the West but she likes the fact that shopping choices are continually improving. "As well as the leisure and social amenities in my local area, I am also a keen surfer so being so close to Strandhill is great. Since moving to the West of Ireland, we have bought a fantastic old house with lots of land which is a dream come true for us. This is something we probably wouldn't have been able to do had we of stayed back in Great Britain. It has its pluses and minuses but, all in all, the way of the life in the West is so much more relaxed and stress free, we are very doubtful we will ever leave." |
